CUREE Organization

CUREE Past Presidents

Over the course of its 28 year history, CUREE had the honor of having many distinguished figures in the field of Earthquake Engineering research serve in the role as president of the organization. Professor Wilfred Iwan of the California Institute of Technology, who was instrumental in the founding of the organization when it began as the California Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering, was the first to serve in this role.

Helmut Krawinkler was the John A. Blume Professor of Engineering at Stanford University. He received an Engineering Diploma from the Technical University Vienna, Austria, an M.S. degree from San Jose State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been on the Stanford faculty since 1973 and has served for 10 years as director of Stanford’s John A. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center. His research focused on the seismic behavior of steel and reinforced concrete structures and on the development of general concepts for performance-based seismic design. He was much involved in the development of guidelines for seismic design and in the implementation of research results in engineering practice.

In recent research, Helmut Krawinkler and his students have focused on the development of transparent seismic design and performance assessment methodologies that explicitly consider the inelastic response characteristics of structures, cumulative damage effects, and the source-to-site characteristics of earthquake ground motions. In his research group much effort was devoted to studying seismic behavior characteristics, such as the effects of structural irregularities, P-delta effects, and the effects of near-fault ground motions on the response of structures. Many of his Ph.D. students devoted much of their effort to the quantification of seismic demands and the development of seismic performance assessment methodologies for building structures, with an emphasis on the collapse safety of deteriorating systems.
