All candidates must hold an earned doctorate degree in Civil Engineering or a related field and demonstrate exceptional promise for high-quality teaching, research, and professional development. A tenured appointment will be considered for candidates with a recognized record of exceptional achievement. Candidates will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, developing and sustaining an extramurally funded sponsored research program, and participating in multi-disciplinary research efforts.

Competitive applicants for the structural engineering position will have a demonstrated record of excellence in one or more of the following areas:

    1) mechanics and design of micro/nano structured materials for engineering structures,
    2) modeling of material microstructures and their connection to nano-, meso-, and macro-scale structural behavior,
    3) development and use of innovative systems and materials to improve the performance of structures subjected to natural or other hazards;
    4) development of innovative approaches for evaluation and design incorporating performance-based design methodologies and structural reliability;
    5) structural health monitoring;
    6) and field and laboratory testing at nano-, meso-, and macro-scales, including the integration of test results with multiscale numerical modeling.

The Department houses well equipped laboratories and Department faculty participate in a number of centers, including the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Equipment Site for Field Testing and Monitoring of Structural Performance, the NSF Center for Embedded Networked Sensing, the NSF/EPA UC Center for Environmental Impacts of Nanotechnology, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the UCLA Water Technology Research Center.

Formal screening has commenced, and applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. Assistant and Associate Professor level applicants must submit a curriculum vita, full contact information for five references, and a two-page teaching and research plan.
